Shlomo Pas – the story behind the name

Shlomo Pas was born in 1932 in Bolonia, Italy as Georgio Goldenberg, to Elvira – a translatress and Yaakov –a wood merchant.

The Goldenberg family moved to Fiume which is a city in Italy.

Before the war Shlomo was a member of the Fascism Youth Movement but in 1939, when the race laws were published resulting the Jewish discrimination, Shlomo was rejected from the movement.

Shlomo's ant and uncle's family that lived next door was taken from their home by the Nazis to Poland except for his cousin that survived by running away to the forest near Fiume.

The Nazis didn't take Shlomo's family because they weren't home that day.

Because of the race laws, his parents lost their jobs and they moved to Firenze.

In 1943, his parents sent him to a monetary in Firenze and they were hidden in an Italian friend's basement with Shlomo's little baby sister and his cousin that had come back from the forest

In the monastery there were many kids.

The Jewish kids in the monastery knew there were some more Jewish kids among them but didn't know who they were.

The crowdedness in the monastery was terrible, 40 kids slept together in a sleeping hall.

When Shlomo saw for the first time a brigade soldier in 1945, he knew the war is about to be over.

After a while he joined his family in the basement – the place they were hidden during the whole war.

Firenze was occupied in February 1945 by the brigade.

Shlomo's parents heard about youth immigration ships to Israel.

They sent him on a ship named "Princess Kathleen" - a British Mandate war ship in March 1945.
